IASP Bridging Identities: Perspectives from Pain Scientists with Lived Experience. Sept 28th 12 PM ET. Host: Michael Gold, PhD

Posted September 27, 2026 |

The perspectives of persons with lived experience (PWLE) of pain are increasingly recognized as critical to advancing the science and practice of pain care. Yet, little attention has been given to the growing number of professionals who bridge both worlds as individuals with dual identities – scientists and clinicians who also live with pain. This webinar brings together a panel of early-career faculty, each with direct and indirect lived experience with pain, to explore how dual identities shape professional motivations, methodological approaches, and opportunities for advocacy within the pain field.

Free to IASP members, $25 for non-members

Educational Objectives

1. Discuss lived experience from diverse perspectives among professionals working in pain science, care and advocacy.
2. Evaluate the opportunities and challenges associated with disclosure of lived experience in professional settings, including stigma, bias, and community-building.
3. Recognize the added value of including people with lived experience (PWLE) as leaders in pain research and clinical practice, and apply insights from PWLE professionals to inform more inclusive mentorship, collaboration, and research design practices.
