Freelance science writers needed to write press summaries for the journal’s press office and front-of-book summaries for Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) and PNAS Nexus. The freelance consultants are contacted by PNAS staff as needed and given writing and editing assignments with a specific timeframe for the project’s completion. Freelance writers produce Tips (200-word lay summaries of PNAS and PNAS Nexus research papers written for the press), TWIPs (This Week in PNAS—200-word summaries written for a scientific audience), QnA-style interviews with newly elected NAS members and other researchers, biographical profiles of NAS members, and other material, as needed. Applicants should have at least 2 years of science writing experience and relevant clips. Experience translating complex scientific material in research articles for journal press tipsheets and/or general audiences is preferred. Please send a resume and relevant clips to pnasnews@nas.edu

One of the world’s most-cited multidisciplinary scientific serials, PNAS publishes original research reports, commentaries, reviews, perspectives, colloquium papers, and actions of the Academy. Coverage in PNAS spans the biological, physical, and social sciences.

Launched in 2021, PNAS Nexus, a sibling journal to PNAS, is open-access and publishes high-quality original research from across the biological, medical, physical, social, and political sciences, as well as engineering and mathematics.
