In PRF news, the most popular story of 2014 covered work from research groups in the US and Europe who found gain-of-function mutations in the sodium channel Nav1.9 in patients with small-fiber neuropathy (Third Sodium Channel Implicated in Painful Small-Fiber Neuropathy). When Cancer Treatment Packs a Painful Punch came in a close second; that story discussed mechanisms of chemotherapy-induced neuropathy, with a focus on an emerging role of mitochondria. PRF meeting coverage garnered four spots in the top 10, including a recap of the Neurobiology of Pain and Itch conference, reports from the 2013 Annual Pain and Migraine Therapeutics Summits East and West, and a summary of the 2014 NIH Pain Consortium Symposium.
What about Papers of the Week? Every paper in the top 10 featured at least one comment from the PRF community. The most viewed paper came from Johns Hopkins and University of Maryland researchers, who identified a role for central TRPV1 in pain hypersensitivity in a mouse model of neuropathic pain. Number two on the list was a paper describing the successful results from a Phase 2 clinical trial of a novel therapeutic—an angiotensin II type 2 receptor antagonist—for the treatment of post-herpetic neuralgia.
See below for the full list of the top 10 most viewed news stories and Papers of the Week in 2014, as of December 19—and let your fellow PRF readers know what you found most interesting this year by leaving a comment below.
